Discover Phu Quoc – Vietnam 13

Discover beautiful Phu Quoc

A tropical paradise, Phu Quoc is the Vietnamese island located in the Gulf of Thailand, just a 50 min plane ride from Ho Chi Minh city.

Home to stunning beaches, some of the friendliest locals we have met and breath taking natural scenery. Phu Quoc was a firm favourite for us on our South East Asia backpacking tour.

When to go?

Peak season in Phu Quoc runs from November – March. However, we recommend travelling slightly out of season to take advantage of the cheaper accommodation and better deals on trips, flights and excursions. April and May are the hottest months reaching soaring temperatures of up to 35 degrees, but to avoid the rainy humid season travel in or a few weeks either side of peak season.

Daily Budget

The currency in Vietnam is Vietnamese Dong, and the rough exchange rate (at the time of writing this post) is 28897.98 Dong to the pound. Phu Quoc was extremely affordable, as with most locations you can pay the extra and indulge in some luxury. Travelling on a budget you can find a host of very reasonable options. You can comfortably backpack with a budget of £30 a day, we set ourselves a limit of £25 and apart from our day out to Vinpearl Land we managed to stick to this with no problems.

Budget examples

Food and drink in Phu Quoc is wonderfully cheap and delicious! We were very happy to find out that a bottle of beer was cheaper than a cup of tea or a soft drink, many places selling it for around – $20000.00 VND(less than £1). Of course if you head to the more commercial western restaurants the food and drink are more expensive. Save a fortune by eating street food from local vendors or head down to the night market in Duang Dong for an incredible food experience! This place was more like a pop up restaurant scene with some of the most mouth wateringly fresh seafood you will ever find. At a local café, a cooked breakfast will set you back roughly £2. An evening meal at one of the local beach restaurants was around £3 – £4.

Accommodation was very varied, luxury options are always available, but for the budget minded backpackers there are a plenty of interesting and beautiful cheaper options. For under £10 a night you can get a perfectly adequate double room close to the beach, or on Airbnb you can rent an entire villa for less than £20 a night!

Where to go in Phu Quoc

50% of this beautiful island is a protected national park, but around the coastline there are various resorts and activities that will appeal to different people. We will give you a rough guide of where to go.

Party Hotspots

The Long Beach area is a popular tourist spot with many late night beach bars and clubs, but the main hub is located around the city of Duong Dong. If you are travelling to the south of the island check out Duong Bao, where most of the main beach resorts are situated.

Phu Quoc, like most of Asia, has many stunning temples. We recommend Dinh Cau temple in Bach Dang, Duong Dong. It was built in 1937 to honour the goddess of the sea. And Ho Quoc Pagoda, perched at he base of a lush mountain overlooking the sea and the rising sun.

Best beaches

By far the prettiest in Phu Quoc is Sao beach located on the South East of the island, miles of powdery white sand and swaying palm trees. Long beach on the Westside is also beautiful, although slightly more commercial. Other beaches we recommend are Dua beach and Cua Can.

Labelled as the best snorkelling destination in Vietnam, Phu Quoc reefs surrounding the island are easily accessible and can be enjoyed by the whole family. Head to the North of the island for amazing snorkelling out by Turtle and Finger island, but most beaches offer great value for money snorkelling tours and experiences.

Personal Highlights

Vinpearl Land

Vinpearl Land Amusement Park Phu Quoc is a massive entertainment hub that contains several sections, including an outdoor water park, outdoor and indoor arcade centres, an aquarium complete with mermaid show, and shopping street. It’s an incredible resort that is absolutely the best family friendly entertainment centre on Phu Quoc Island.

Accessible within a 20-minute drive from Ong Lang Beach, Vinpearl Land also offers spectacular displays of lights, music, and water acrobatics at the amphitheatre, and its indoor games centre features 120 arcades such as horse racing, motor-racing, and shooting.

An Yen Resort and Sao Beach

We stumbled across the An Yen Resort on when we were planning a few days at Phu Quoc’s most beautiful Sao Beach. The resort has limited accommodation which we found gave it a far more remote, and personal experience. Complete with a private beach and delicious home cooked meals, our camping experience at the resort was one of our personal highlights. There were only five of us staying on the entire forested eco resort and watching the sunrise from the private beach with the waves crashing up onto the rocks was truly magnificent.

Ham Ninh Waterfall

The tour costs only $10,000 VND (around 40 pence) and includes a 15 minute trek through stunning forest scenery to get to the waterfall. Make sure you pack your swimming gear as you will not be able to resist jumping in! Be warned, however that in intense heats the waterfall can dry up so best time to visit is slightly out of season. The only issues was the amount of litter strewn around the first part of the forest trek, but in all it was still a wonderful day out.

Boat Tours

We booked on the Phil Hai tourist boat tour from Duong Dong, we were picked up from our hotel by a taxi and driven straight to the boat. The snorkelling up by Turtle island was out of this world and the trip included a home cooked meal on the boat and stunning sunset photo opportunities. We visited the Pearl Factory on the way which was an interesting you have any great experiences
